Recently Internet Movie Database offered as one of its daily polls the chance to vote on the best movie quote so far of the new millennium. The nominees sadly proved once again that the art of the filmmaking in America is currently at its lowest ebb ever. Not only has this decade witnessed the fewest truly great movies of any decade, but so far it appears not to have produced one single truly popular movie line that will make it to classic status.

The winner of the IMDB poll for the best movie quote of the new millennium is a case in point of the total lack of creativity currently in place in Hollywood. What was the winner? “My precious” from that cure for insomnia The Lord of the Rings. In the first place, I think this should be considered a classic book quote rather than a classic movie quote. Along the same line, so should “Forgive them, Father, they know not what they do,” from The Passion of the Christ, originally found in the Bible, of course, and “With great power comes great responsibility,” from Spiderman, originally from the comic book. “Good night and good luck,” has, of course, been with us since Edward R. Murrow originally signed off with it on his news reports fifty years ago.
As if those quotes weren’t suspect enough as being great movie quotes, consider such other questionable nominees as:

“They’re called boobs, Ed,” from Erin Brokovich.
“Are you not entertained?” from Gladiator.
“I am a golden god!” from Almost Famous.
“Wilson!” from Cast Away.

Not to mention this one: “The son becomes the father and the father the son.” Does anyone even know what movie that is from? Doubtful since Superman Returns returned to obscurity after its first week of release.

Honestly, how many people go around quoting those lines? A great movie quote should be something that saturates everyday discourse. And it should be immediately recognizable by at least a large minority of patrons in a fast food restaurant. For instance, if I were to say, “Be the ball” most people would know what movie that came from. Ditto: “And don’t call me Shirley.” Some great movie quotes are, of course, great precisely because of their obscurity.

“Match me, Sidney” is a terrific movie quote despite not being recognized by substantial number of moviegoers. It is best used when one wants to assert authority over someone else. It’s from the movie The Sweet Smell of Success and Burt Lancaster says it to Tony Curtis to both belittle Curtis’ character, deepen the sense of his own importance among the other characters present, and getting his cigarette lit for him. So, obviously, a great movie quote doesn’t achieve legacy simply by being well-recognized.

It is, of course, very difficult to determine what makes a movie quote so memorable. Often it depends upon the delivery. For instance, “I’m walking here!” gets its power from Dustin Hoffman’s acting ability in Midnight Walker, as well as the circumstance of the scene. Other classic movie quotes achieve status due to the fact that it can used in any number of circumstances. “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse,” springs to mind.

And, of course, some movie quotes make it into the public vernacular due to advertising. “I’m back” from the Terminator and “Go ahead, make my day,” from the Dirty Harry movie Sudden Impact were clearly both written with the express intention of creating a catchphrase. And if you doubt that is possible, then consider the lengths the filmmakers Snakes on a Plan have gone to create the catchphrase for a movie that hasn’t even been released yet but is already in the public consciousness.

If you go to the American Film Institute site and you peruse their list of the 100 best movie quotes of all time and then compare them to the nominees in the IMDB poll, it points to how really sad things have gotten. (Of course, some real stinkeroos did make it onto that list and some truly great quotes were left off.) Even leaving aside for the moment that those nominations were basically the work of one person, the fact remains that the reason he chose those lame quotes is because there aren’t that many universally recognized quotes from movies made this decade.

Anyone who has spent time in a high school classroom in the past two years will tell you that if you were to come up with a real list of great movie quotes from this decade, at least half of them would be quotes from Napoleon Dynamite. There can be little argument that Napoleon Dynamite is the most quotable movie since…well, probably since Caddyshack or Airplane. Maybe the problem for the guy that created the poll on IMDB is that he just couldn’t choose which Napoleon Dynamite quote was the best. Or maybe he just didn’t like it. I’ll tell you this, though, just about any quote from Napoleon Dynamite is more memorable than any of the quotes from that poll I’ve already mentioned, as well as these I haven’t:

“Did you drink and dial” from Sideways.
“Mo cuishle means 'My darling, my blood'” from Million Dollar Baby.
“Seven days,” from The Ring.

It is perhaps unfair to judge five and a half years of movie quotes based on the misguided nominations of one person. “Another quote entirely” came in third place in the poll. I how the results might have been different had some of these quotes made it onto the list:

“I'll tell you what he said - he asked me to forcibly insert the Lifeline exercise card into my anus!” Donnie Darko.
“That suit, it’s…it’s incredible.” Napoleon Dynamite.
“I don’t believe in God, I believe in science.” Nacho Libre.
“Silly Caucasian girl likes to play with samurai swords.” Kill Bill, Vol. I.

There are other good quotes, sure. And since I haven’t seen every movie made this decade, there are probably some good quotes I haven’t heard, or when I do hear them I don’t recognize them as movie quotes. But the fact remains that most of the movie quotes from the films released this decade simply don’t hold a candle to the movie quotes from decades past

With the exception of my pick for the best movie quote so far this decade, a quote that should have entered into mainstream use right up there with “You talking to me?” or “Here's looking at you, kid.” This one is a true standout, in my opinion, and would be near the top in any decade. From Once Upon a Time in Mexico: “The man who wants nothing is invincible.”
Now that's a great movie quote.

Bruno Dumont's latest film, Flanders, screening in Lincoln Center's “Rendez-vous with French Cinema 2007″ series, which runs at the Walter Reade Theater from February 28 through March 11, is a highlight of this year's selections. A return to form after his failed US-set experiment, Twentynine Palms, Flanders returns Dumont to his familiar milieu of raw sex and violence told with Bressonian preciseness and economy. While Flanders is not quite up to the level of his near-masterpieces Life of Jesus and Humanity, it is a searing vision of war and its effects on those who fight it and those they leave behind, made all the more powerful by Dumont's painfully unadorned and stripped-down presentation. Following Dumont's usual method of casting, the actors in Flanders are all non-professionals.

We first encounter Demester (Samuel Boidin), working on his farm. We soon learn he is about to go off to war; whether he has been drafted or volunteered is unclear. Demester is a rather brutish-looking, inarticulate hulk of a man; the actor playing him is one of the very distinctive ones that Dumont has an uncanny ability to discover. He speaks with a friend about the war, in very plain and simple terms.

We are then introduced to the film's other central character, Barbe (Adelaide Leroux), Demester's sometime paramour, and there is an early scene of the two having sex in the woods near the farm, shot in an unblinking fashion that emphasizes the animalistic nature of the coupling. This sort of non-dramatized vision will be carried throughout the rest of the film, both in the home and war scenes.

Before Demester is about to go to war, he has drinks with Barbe and other friends in a local bar. Perhaps to distance himself from Barbe's reputation as the town slut, he denies that they have a real relationship. To punish him, she picks up another man, the more conventionally handsome Blondel (Henri Cretel), who will soon join Demester in the war, fighting in the same regiment. The pain on Demester's face as he watches them is quite palpable. Later, Barbe tearfully embraces them both before they go off to fight.

Up to this point, the bleak rural setting (beautifully rendered by Dumont's regular cinematographer Yves Cape) and the lack of an obvious contemporary feel would lead one into thinking this is a period film, perhaps set during World War I, in which Flanders was a famous setting. It is a surprise, then, that when we finally see the men in the battlefield, they are fighting a modern war in a Middle Eastern desert, clearly evoking the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The country they are in is unnamed, and the nature of the conflict is never stated. What everything is reduced to is casual brutality on both sides. The soldiers shoot two teenage boy soldiers and brutally rape a female soldier. Dumont frames these scenes in medium shot, without cutting, close-ups or musical underlining, a matter-of-fact method that makes them all the more disturbing. Demester, however, doesn't seem to participate in these atrocities; he simply observes them, but does nothing to protest or stop them. Later, the soldiers are captured by enemy forces, in which they are shot, tortured, and subjected to the same treatment they have given out.

The film alternates between the battlefield and the farm, where Barbe becomes increasingly agitated, to the point that she is committed to a mental hospital. She also aborts Blondel's child. Barbe seems to feel the cruelty of the war in an extremely empathetic way; after the soldiers shoot the children in the stomach, there is a cut to Barbe holding her stomach. Although this is perhaps due to her pregnancy, the juxtaposition of these shots suggests otherwise. An outburst she makes to Demester later in the film, where she says she saw what happened in the war, confirms this. Barbe, far from the battle, feels the death and destruction keenly, while Demester and the other soldiers commit brutal acts without remorse or any recognizable human feeling. We can infer from this that in Dumont's view, women, as far more empathetic creatures than men, are far less likely to cause the conflicts that lead to the carnage that we see here.

Demester returns from the war, in the film's terms, just as abruptly as he went in. Outwardly, he seems unchanged, returning to his usual life of work on the farm, and sex with Barbe. When asked about the war, he says simply, “It was hell out there.” However, the film's final scenes drive home how profoundly he has been transformed by his war experience. Culminating in a final scene that explicitly evokes Bresson's character epiphanies (especially Pickpocket), Flanders offers a vision of war that is quietly shattering and quite moving, remarkably achieving this without overt politics or specifics, rendering Dumont's essential truths in quite visceral relief.

Traditional horror films have usually stayed clear of the sub-genre involving water simply because of the difficulties and logistics of filming there. Water is an unpredictable and uncontrollable element in the same vein as animals and children (whom both provide their own “special” obstacles when it comes to filming).

Although water-bound films are some of the most difficult for filmmakers it also provides for some of the most compelling storytelling elements, which is why filmmakers continue to return there time and time again. Where would we be without the extraordinary Das Boot or The Hunt For Red October, Jaws or even Pirates of the Caribbean. Can anyone say Titanic?

Below is a list of some of the best films in this watery subgenre that continue to haunt and fascinate audiences. Although this list mostly highlights horror films, included are also several films that defy genre conventions and should be included on the list nevertheless. The following films are presented in alphabetical order and not in order in terms of quality or hierarchy.

When writer & director James Cameron unleashed his now classic The Abyss (1989) audiences were subjected to an experience that even director Stephen Spielberg couldn't imagine. This story of a U.S. submarine being rescued by deep sea rig company personnel and a military special ops unit who encounter aliens in the deep crossed all types of genres and audience expectations. It is the “underwater” alien film that Spielberg never created. It had both state of the art SFX, action, romance, and suspense as only the director of The Terminator (1984) and Aliens (1986) could craft. It continues to amaze audiences and is a benchmark in cinema that has yet to be surpassed.

When 1997's Anaconda was released upon audiences no one was expecting much from this B-movie giant snake film but its better than average SFX and unexpected dark humor by the (then) up and coming talent of Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube made the film all audiences between the ages of 16-28 went to see on repeat viewings. The film captured magic in a bottle to which the sequel (Anacondas: The Hunt For The Blood Orchid) could not recapture. The film continues to enjoy a long shelf life on video and cable due to character actor Jon Voigt's unforgettable death scene at the end?

Next up is the better then average haunted submarine film Below (2002) from writer/director David Twohy, who brought to life The Arrival (1996) and Pitch Black (2000). Twohy continues to defy genre expectations by crafting smart and complex B-movies. Although this film was generally ignored at the Box Office it has thus far become a popular film on video/DVD and cable. This is one of the few haunted submarine films that doesn't talk down to the audience and it is all the better for it.

There cannot be a discussion about water-bound horror films without including the one film that started it all - The Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954). This Universal monster film still captures the imagination even to this day and has influenced countless other monster films since (i.e. television's Invasion and Surface to Humanoids From the Deep). This story of a humanoid fish-man becoming infatuated with a human female has elements of the fairy tale “Beauty & the Beast” but due to the location of the film (being mostly in or near the water) it continues to entertain despite the similar films that have followed. There are rumors of a remake that should surface (no pun intended) within the next two years but there is little doubt that the new film will be able to ever surpass this classic when so many other films have failed.

Dead Calm (1989) made Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane household names and is there any reason why it shouldn't have? This film is a claustrophobic suspense thriller that never lets up from beginning to end. One of the delights of this film is that no one knows what will happen next and it always keeps you on the edge of your seat. Sometimes the smaller the cast the better as this three-actor film (San Neil makes up the third) proves that bigger is not always better.

There are shark films and then there is Deep Blue Sea (1999). This film about genetically manipulated and “intelligent” sharks was a first for big studios as most films similar to this would've been relegated to the straight to video/DVD shelves (i.e. Shark Attack and Megaladon). This film defied audience expectations by being both suspenseful and genuinely funny. It also doesn't hurt that all the so-called name actors actually die by the end of the film leaving the then unknown Thomas Jane alone to battle the intelligent sharks. Also, by leaving rapper-turned-actor LL Cool J alive by the end when most audiences just knew he was going to die at some point, the film created an atmosphere where no one knew what was going to happen next.

Now to bring up the biggest film on the list - Jaws (1975). There is nothing more or new that I can say about this film that hasn't already been said by so many other people other then to say that if you haven't seen this film then I don't know what rock you've been living under. There have been many films that have tried to capture the spirit that Spielberg captured with this film but there is no denying that this shark will never be captured again. You just need to bring a bigger boat.

The Box Office was not kind when Leviathan (1989) was released but that does not deter from this underwater horror film being one of the best to have come about. This film concerns an underwater mining corporation coming across a Russian ship the Leviathan that sunk itself to forever keep buried a secret involving genetic manipulation and a creature that kills in order to create more of itself. Starring the ever reliable Peter Weller (of Robocop, Of Unknown Origin, and Screamers) this film is better then expected with a great supporting cast. This film is also highly suspenseful and perfect for all horror film enthusiasts.

On a more recent note is the low budget indie film Open Water (2003) which is a highly suspenseful two-cast film about a scuba diving couple who accidently get stranded in the middle of shark infested waters as they must fend off the natural elements and the coldness of the sea in hopes of being rescued. This film is very claustrophobic even though it takes place in the open sea and completely and emotionally engaging as you realize the harsh reality that this film was inspired by true events. Not a film to be missed.

Equally engaging is Visitors (2003), which is a film about one woman being plagued by cabin fever on her sale boat and just how terrifying it can be to be on a sailboat by yourself for an extended period of time. The film works so well because of Rahja Mitchell's (of High Art, Silent Hill, and Pitch Black) unbelievably superb performance, which keeps the film moving along at a brisk pace.

All the above films have good and bad points but the good points far out weigh the bad. Some you may have seen while others you may have never heard of but all are worth a viewing for the true lover of water-bound horror films. Others that could be included are Orca (1977), Virus (1999), Deep Rising (1998), Sphere (1998), and Deep Star Six (1989), to name a few, so, I hope you decide to take a chance on a few of these films that you may not have already seen.
